AC / DC frontman Brian Johnson praised Stevie Young for carrying on the rhythm guitar tradition established by his uncle Malcolm Young on the band’s new album, Power Up.
“You don’t want to back down, and I think Stevie’s contribution is that he’s maintained that level,” Johnson told UCR. “And Stevie, his part is to maintain that level exactly where Angus [Young] and Malcolm always wanted it – you know, the best it could be. I think that’s it, really. “
But Angus Young and Johnson don’t see this as an evolution, instead preferring to note that Stevie Young’s work is a continuation of what AC / DC has always done.
“We probably always just strive together [to get] a good rock song, “says Angus Young.” When you’re doing something and creating something, it’s always good to say, “Do I think it’s AC / DC, these elements?” … I don’t think we’re evolving, we’re probably shooting like a turntable! “
“It’s hard to talk about evolution when, really, you don’t want to be better than rock ‘n’ roll is,” Johnson adds.
Stevie had previously replaced Malcolm, who died in 2017, in 1988 Blow up your video toured and joined the band for 2014 Rock or bust album and tour when his uncle retired. Sure Power Up, which releases Friday, Stevie can be heard playing guitar parts written by Malcolm as he and Angus began creating the material that became 2008 Black ice.
“We had a bunch of things we both worked on,” Angus says. “Before we did this album, we spent some time together writing a lot of stuff together.… Back then you can only present so much. So that’s Malcolm’s big contribution. is part of all songwriting on the album. … I always leave humming a lot of ideas that we’ve both worked on over the years. “
