ACC Commissioner John Swofford has made his first public comments on the Clemson-FSU postponement and its consequences.
The teams were officially unable to come to an agreement to play after a reserve from Clemson tested positive on Friday after traveling to Tallahassee.
Coach Clemson Dabo swinney made strong comments on Sunday saying the Seminoles had used COVID as an excuse to get out of the game and they were truly lost in his eyes. He said he had no intention of returning to Tallahassee without the Tigers being compensated for their weekend trip or that the Seminoles would have to come to Clemson if they wanted to play this season.
Swofford spoke out against Swinney’s comments in an ESPN interview.
“It’s unfortunate and I don’t think anyone is in a position to question a doctor’s decision-making in this type of situation,” Swofford told Andrea Adelson of ESPN. “That’s where the decision lies, and in the eyes of our Presidents and Athletic Directors, that’s where the decision must lie.”
Swofford said he trusted the medical staff in place at the schools.
“I don’t think there is any blame here,” Swofford said. “We have to remember the world in which we operate now. People follow the protocols that were agreed upon before the season starts, and people try to make the best decisions for the right reasons, and you stick to that. ”
Swofford also addressed the possibility of rescheduling the game.
“We want to make sure, as we head down the straight and there are essential games to determine which two teams would be in Charlotte, that the right games are played at the right time, and there is no ‘so there is no great rush to do it, but I hope both teams play, ”he said.
On accusations that the decision to postpone was not ‘related to COVID’, Swofford said: ‘It’s unfortunate and I don’t think anyone is in a position to question a doctor’s decision making in this type of situation.
