Put this on the top of the most speculative scale yet, but an analyst firm has suggested that Apple is already working on a foldable, 5G compatible iPad to change its range of tablets in a near future.
The advice comes from analyst Jeff Lin of Economic Daily News and IHS Markit, and is based on the usual sources in the supply chain. A folding iPad report could be with us as early as next year, the report says.
Apparently, the iPad would have a screen the size of a MacBook, but we do not get many other details. It could be a real foldable like the Huawei Mate X, or two separate screens connected by a hinge.
We already know that Apple is studying both 5G technologies and flip-flops, but we would not take this forecast too seriously for the time being – 2020 seems to be a quick turnaround for Apple.
Foldable, incoming 5G
While this year saw folding phones for the first time, Samsung and Huawei, for example, have not yet sold them to consumers. It's a very difficult technology to produce and use.
Apple usually waits until it can implement something good before adding it to its devices, whether for wireless charging or for waterproofing, and the same is probably true for folding screens.
The 5G part of this particular prediction is more believable: Apple was tipped to release an iPhone 5G by 2020, so iPads would not be too late (or could even appear before phones).
Other analysts have suggested that a 5G iPad was in the works and that this might remain reserved for the Pro range of devices, but the consensus seems to be that 5G compatible models do not exist. will not appear until 2021.
