NEWARK – A school bus carrying a dozen special needs students crashed after the driver had overdosed "narcotics," police said Wednesday.

This is the second time in two days that a driver needs to be revived with naloxone after a crash in the state.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office said the bus had hit a tree just after 13 hours. at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Jones Street, near Springfield Avenue and University Heights.

Lisa M. Byrd, 57, of Newark, had to be resuscitated with the Naloxone brand Narcan, according to police chief Anthony Ambrose.

First responders discovered that Byrd had fainted behind the wheel with drugs and props, Ambrose said.

The 12 passengers were between 5 and 13 years old. They attend Fourteen Street School. They were not seriously injured.

Byrd has been charged with 12 counts of endangering children and impaired driving.

Ambrose stated that Byrd's license had been suspended from 1996 to 2006 without revealing the reason for it. He added that the police were investigating the current status of his license and whether or not he had a commercial driver's license, required to drive a bus in New Jersey.

A day earlier, three people died after the alleged driver under the influence of the drug crashed at a gas station in Wayne.

NBC New York, citing sources of public order, said Glenwood's 29-year-old Jason Vanderee was to be revived with the heroin antidote after his car jumped the sidewalk in front of a Wayne gas station and crashed on several vehicles and an attendant at the gas station.
