According to the Chicago Fire Department, no dangerous goods were found in or around Dirksen's US courthouse in the loop on Monday morning after teams were called into the area because of potentially dangerous fumes.
The area around the courthouse, located at 219 S. Dearborn Street, was closed to pedestrians and traffic after officials received a call around 7:50 am for potentially hazardous materials. Just before 10:20 am, emergency crews determined that the air quality was safe after crossing all floors of the courthouse, basement and CTA stations, said Larry Langford. , spokesman for the fire department.
Chicago police said there were no injuries reported.
Workers who had arrived in the building before the call were asked to stay inside, Langford said. Other workers who arrived while emergency crews were inside the courthouse were redirected to the lobby of a nearby building, Langford said.
The authorities had closed Jackson Boulevard between Clark Street and State Street, but the newspaper was reopened just before 10:30 am, according to an alert from the city's emergency management and communications office.
