An Uber driver in California says that a carpool application customer had him deliver fentanyl instead of a passenger, authorities said.

The driver was trying to take a passenger to San Francisco last week to be driven to Tiburon, a town about 27 km north of the city, when a man greeted him instead, wrote the Marin County Sheriff's Office in a Facebook message on Saturday.

The man told the driver that he did not need to drive but wanted him to "deliver a box to the woman who asked for it.

Officials said the driver was "hesitant" to respond to the request, but "since the man knew the name of the person who requested the trip, he agreed to do so".

Uber driver put the box of sneakers on the ground near the passenger seat and headed to the place. Suddenly, as he was crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, the woman canceled the ride, leaving the driver with the mysterious shoe box.

Officials said a few minutes later, the driver had seen Marin County sheriff's deputies and asked them to help them examine the box. MPs found a pair of Nike sneakers inside, with "presumed fentanyl in the right shoe".

The authorities have highlighted the sneakers – "the driver not wanting anything to do with shoes or drugs" – and jokingly said that they "would wait for the owner to claim them".
