NEW YORK – In a recording played Wednesday in Federal Court, Emanuel "Book" Richardson, former coach-basketball assistant for Arizona, said that Sean Miller was paying to former player Deandre Ayton 10 $ 000 per month while studying.
According to a report by
ESPN
, the call took place on June 20, 2017 and was intercepted by phone tapping.
During the phone call, Richardson and his agent, Christian Dawkins, were discussing how to recruit Ayton into the Dawkins Sports Management Corporation, which led them to discuss payments to Ayton.
ESPN transcribed the recorded recording for the jury:
"We'll see how Sean plays the game," Dawkins said.
"Do you know what he's bought every month?" Richardson asked.
"What's he doing?" Dawkins said.
"I said – 10," replied Richardson.
"He is putting money for them (expletive)," Dawkins replied. "He told me that he was getting himself killed."
"But it's his fault," Richardson said.
In the 2017-2018 season, Miller claimed that he had never had a conversation like that described by Dawkins.
"Let me be very very clear," Miller said. "I have never discussed with Christian Dawkins the payment of Deandre Ayton at the University of Arizona."
On April 19, a federal judge ruled that Miller
will not testify
in this ongoing college basketball trial.
