The Mississippi River at Lock and Dam 15, Rock Island, as well as the Rock River at Moline, continued to decline on Saturday, with sunny, warm weather for Sunday.
But meteorologists are watching a northern system that, if properly put in place, could create a situation in which the Mississippi River would rise again, but not at the record level of 22.7 feet, it fell at 5:50 pm. Thursday.
Meteorologist Rick Kinney of the Davenport National Weather Service said on Saturday, "We are not out of the woods yet," adding that people should leave their flood protection in place for now.
"We have potential for several different storms this week," Kinney said Saturday, adding that they were still determining which models seemed the most accurate.
"If you add up all the potential rainfall, this could lead to further upsurges of the Mississippi River and its tributaries," he said. These increases will not be close to the record level recorded Thursday.
Although spring storm systems can be unpredictable, "it certainly seems like a wet configuration and there is a risk of heavy rainfall," he said.
"There are still a lot of scenarios at stake," Kinney said. "Rainfall on us is not good because with very saturated soils, all the rain is pouring quickly into the river system.
"If we have rain north of us, especially if it is more shady to the Mississippi River basin and northern Illinois, it will also feed in the Mississippi River."
It would be better if the rain falls south of the Quad-Cities, "but that does not seem to be a likely scenario at this stage," he said.
Sunday's day should be beautiful but a little windy with a temperature in the 70s and winds of 5 to 20 mph.
Chances of rain return Sunday to Monday with a 40 percent chance of showers after 2 am on Monday.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain Monday during the day, then 60 percent Monday night.
The Mississippi River at Rock Island had dropped to 22.07 feet at 18 hours. Saturday and falling. The flood stage is 15 feet.
The Rock River at Moline was 15.15 feet at 17.30. Saturday and falling. The flood stage is 12 feet.
