A GOP lawmaker, in the state of Tennessee, called for getting rid of the entire higher education system, saying that such a move would "save America" .

State Senator Kerry Roberts made the remarks during his conservative radio show. He addressed his problems with the higher education system while discussing a recent legislative hearing on abortion legislation.

Roberts asserted that the public testimony of an activist for the right to abortion was a "product of higher education," adding that the removal of the system would "save America" .

The Associated Press first reported the legislator's comments.

He also claimed that the removal of higher education would cut a "liberal breeding ground" and asked why public colleges were funded by taxpayers' money.

Roberts did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Roberts approved a Tennessee budget earlier this year that included money for colleges and universities, noted the AP. He graduated from Lipscomb University in 1983, based on his profile at the Tennessee Senate.
