While they may have dragged out the Wild Cards race, the St. Louis Cardinals did so by missing their ace, Jack Flaherty, for much of the season with a slant injury.
The good news for the Cardinals is that Flaherty came back two starts ago and started pretty well. The bad news is that tonight he not only got rocked by the Tigers, but he only lasted two innings and changed before leaving with the coach:

Flaherty’s speed was well down after the first run, with some of his typically 95 mph fast balls appearing solidly under 90 mph. Ouch.
Jack Flaherty’s speed looked good in the first and then the starter to fall off a cliff. No big signs.

And in addition to the yikes is the matter of concern:
RHP Jack Flaherty was pulled from tonight’s game due to a contraction in his right shoulder.

Granted, it could be something minor. But when a guy is barely coming out of a separate injury, does he see his speed drop halfway through, and is the area under discussion the shoulder? It is a big concern. Considering how important Jack Flaherty is to the Cardinals not only this year but also next year and beyond, he’s a guy we tend to follow very closely (even though the Cubs are out of the race this year. year).
