On Saturday night at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, an artist died when he was struck and apparently crushed by a slowly lowering backdrop during a performance of the opera “Sadko”. Yevgeny Kulesh, a 37-year-old actor who had been performing at the Bolshoi since 2002, died before the arrival of the ambulance team, according to media reports.
Video surreptitiously shot from the audience shows the backdrop descending, then a number of artists waving their arms. A member of the public told a reporter that she suddenly heard cries of “Go get a doctor!” Call an ambulance, someone has been hit by the backdrop! She said the orchestra stopped playing, and in less than a minute the curtain closed and the audience was told to leave.
Nikolai Tsiskardze, once the Bolshoi lead dancer, told the Komsomolkaya Pravda newspaper that he was sure the fault was not with the performer, but with the technical staff of the theater. “In the wings is hell. The dancers damage their legs when the sets and the stairs fall. The are no the Windows Where ventilation.”
The Moscow commission of inquiry opened an investigation on Sunday morning.
