The actress joked in a suppressed tweet since "maybe someone" in Trump's camp "can gently give her a shiv", a slang term for a knife used as a weapon.

"In fact, he looks better here! Maybe someone on his side will be able to shake him gently. I mean, push yourself," the actress wrote to him more than 1.6 million followers.

Wednesday morning, in a tweet, Midler thanked his supporters "who came to my defense last night at my Battle of the Bulge with the one who should not be named."

"Your spirit and good nature have really raised my spirits, and as a newly washed psychopath I am very grateful for your thoughts and prayers," she joked.

Midler and Trump have traded verbal taunts on Twitter in recent days. The president called the latter a "psychopath" and "sick hustler" and the actress shared a series of insults directed against the president.

Trump criticized Midler on Tuesday after sharing a fabricated quote from 1998 claiming that Trump had labeled GOP voters "the country's dumbest group". The quote was debunked by the website checking the Snopes facts in 2015.

"@BetteMidler, a dilapidated psychopath, was forced to apologize for a statement that she attributed to me and which turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to give your" big " President "a really bad appearance," wrote Trump to his nearly 60 million followers. "She's caught, just like Fake News Media gets caught, a sick hustler!"

Midler was criticized for the "shiv" joke on Twitter, with some saying the threat violated the social media giant's terms of service.
