Acuna's success gives Braves another victory against Marlins

Next year, Marlins.

And here is one last thing to remember from Ronald Acuna before leaving.

The Braves played their 19th and final game of the season against the Miami Marlins on Thursday night at SunTrust Park and beat them for the 15th time. Appropriately, Acuna punctuated his dominance throughout the season by delivering a tee-off, a simple go-and-go in two outings in the ninth inning for a 3-2 win in Atlanta.

"Yes, I really think it was … an appropriate end to our way of playing the Marlins," Acuna said through an interpreter. "But I would have much better … hit a home run against them."

Gawk at Acuna's last record in 2019 against the Marlins: batting average of .319, percentage based on .402, .708 counterattack percentage, nine homers and 18 RBIs. All this in 72 bats.

"It's dominance," said pitcher Mike Soroka. "It's simple, he came to play every day and I do not know if it had anything to do with last year (when Marlins thrower Jose Urena sadly pierced Acuna at the elbow in the first pitch of a match).

"He's doing it against all the teams. But what he did against them, I think it put them in a situation in which they would have put him on the spot and everyone knows he has a good chance of causing harm. "

The Braves' Marlins are now 15-4 and 29-8 in the past two seasons.

Acuna played against the Marlins for the last time this year with two new players and new teammate Adeiny Hechavarria in third at the end of the ninth. Hechavarria had opened the sleeve with a double on the left field line.

No one in the stadium was surprised when Acuna placed Ryne Stanek's 2-2 defender in the center left of the end goal.

"I had a very good feeling (this would happen)," said Braves manager Brian Snitker. "He had a really amazing year against this club, that's for sure."

"He had his ground to hit," said Soroka, "and he did not miss it."

The result was the Braves' eighth victory in the semifinals this season, the second ending with a success at Acuna.

Thus the series that started Tuesday night with another Pitcher Marlins (Elieser Hernandez) striking Acuna with his first throw, this time in the group, ended Thursday night with the success of Acuna. Meanwhile, Acuna scored a two-run homer Wednesday.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second round on Thursday in a RBI single by veteran Hechavarria, who has hit five of his six matches since joining the team last week. But they lost 2-1 in seventh place when the Marlins had three straight strikes against an excellent Soroka, who only allowed five hits in seven innings. Freddie Freeman's home race in the eighth, his 34th of the season, tied the game and ended the ninth inning.

The win was Braves fifth straight and completed a 7-2 homestand. Now, they go for six road games: three in New York against the Mets this weekend, a makeup match in Colorado on Monday and two games in Toronto on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The trip will begin Friday night with Jacob deGrom, winner of last year's NL Young Award, pitching for the Mets. Mike Foltynewicz will start for the Braves.

Regarding the Marlins: Acuna and the Braves will face them again on April 3, at the home opening game of next season.
