Adam Cole would have ended up with the WWE NXT brand.

Tonight’s WWE NXT Takeover 36 event saw Cole lose to Kyle O’Reilly in Game 2 of 3 Falls. O’Reilly won the first fall, a traditional wrestling match, while Cole won the second fall, a Street Fight. O’Reilly then had Cole hit to win the third and final fall, while Cole handcuffed O’Reilly to the third rope.

It was first revealed several weeks ago, exclusively by WrestlingInc, that Cole’s contract expired in early July, but agreed to an extension that would see him work during SummerSlam Weekend for the Takeover 36 event. from this evening. Cole was reportedly in contract negotiations with WWE at some point prior to the resumption.

In one update, tonight’s loss of Takeover 36 was Cole’s last appearance with the NXT brand, according to PWInsider.

Interestingly, the report mentioned how it was Cole’s last appearance on the NXT. Whether he’ll stay with the company for a RAW or SmackDown call remains to be seen.

It was reported earlier this month that Cole spoke with WWE Chief Executive Officer Vince McMahon behind the scenes on a SmackDown recording, for a reunion that went extraordinarily well. It was said that McMahon had taken a liking to Cole on a personal level, and that Cole was wanted on the main roster. Cole was reportedly offered a job at RAW or SmackDown, should he choose to re-sign with the company.

It is believed that AEW would be interested in signing Cole if he leaves WWE. Cole is engaged to AEW Women’s World Champion Britt Baker.

Stay tuned for more on Cole’s WWE status. Here are some images from tonight’s game at Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando:
