Adam Gase: competitive disadvantage to tell who’s following who’s playing

After Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, Jets head coach Adam Gase engaged in a tough back-and-forth with reporters over who was calling the team’s offensive plays.

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains returned to duty a few weeks ago, but questions have been raised as Loggains was seen without a game sheet during Sunday’s game as Gase appeared to call games. Gase initially said there was no change until he admitted that he called plays in certain situations.

The topic came up at Gase’s Monday press conference and the head coach described it as a collaborative effort while refusing to delve into setting up the collaboration.

“For us, saying like who’s calling what, when, what situation and those things is a competitive disadvantage, really, at the end of the day,” Gase said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “You do not want [opponents] to find out, does this guy call errands? Does he call for passes? Does he call for play-actions? Does it call for voids? Does he call dropbacks? Who has the third and who has the red zone? We would like to do this without having to make it public. The last three weeks it’s been a collaborative effort throughout the game. ”

The Jets are competitively disadvantaged enough this season that a difference in playing players seems insignificant enough and they plan to have new ones after five more games with the current staff.
