On Monday, the Philadelphia Phillies made an important roster decision ahead of Opening Day by sending veteran outfielder Odubel Herrera to the alternate venue. In turn, that means Adam Haseley and Roman Quinn will be on the active roster to start the season, and they will likely form a squad at center field.
During Grapefruit League play, Haseley was one of the Phillies’ most productive hitters, while Herrera generally struggled. Haseley, 24, has an 88 OPS + through two-season games with the Phillies with over 750 defensive innings in centerfield. A former No. 8 overall at the University of Virginia, Haseley was widely regarded as one of the Top 100 prospects at the start of the 2018 season. Quinn has been much more effective on the right side over the course of his career, which is why means he would pair well with lefty hitter Haseley.
As for Herrera, the Phillies nominated him for an assignment in January last year, following his suspension for the entire 2019 season under the MLB domestic violence policy. Herrera was arrested in Atlantic City in May 2019 on suspicion of domestic violence. The simple assault charge against him was dropped, but the MLB still determined that a stay was necessary. Herrera is now 29 years old and hasn’t produced at an above-average level since 2017.
The Phillies, however, still give him the opportunity to relaunch his career at the alternate site. In the meantime, however, they will look to a patchwork arrangement in the center field as they attempt to fight in the difficult NL East.
