Adam Schefter on Carson Wentz: “If I had to guess, I guess he’s traded”

The idea that Carson Wentz doesn’t want to return to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 only gets stronger.

COONEY: Schefty, I have to ask you about this Jared Goff trade that we just saw happen, with him going to the Lions. Is there anything we can take away from that that makes a Carson Wentz trade moreā€¦ I don’t mean more possible, more likely?

SCHEFTER: No, not more likely. Because they aren’t going to trade it unless they get their fair value back. And what I would say is that the problem is the Eagles are going to want heavy compensation for a guy who a few years ago could have won the NFL MVP. They all want a strong conversation. And let me say this: that they will listen, absolutely listen. And if a team makes the right offer, there will be a trade that will take place. But if a team doesn’t make the right offer, I think they’ll be willing to bring him back and have him compete at camp with Jalen Hurts. So for me it could go both ways.

KINCADE: We went back and forth, Adam, on the idea that he still hasn’t spoken. Or hasn’t even released a statement. At this point, now that the new coach –

SCHEFTER: Well, that tells you something.

KINCADE: That’s right! This tells me that the leader of the franchise, the guy who’s supposed to be the face of the franchise, is kind of out of touch with the franchise.

SCHEFTER: And wants to leave the franchise. Okay? And that’s why trading is always at stake. And, again, people wonder where this stuff comes from at the end of the year. Was it done [up]? It is all real. None of this is made up. And just because he would like to be moved or that he hasn’t commented that he will be. If I had to guess, I guess he’s traded. That’s what I’m assuming. At one point this offseason. But, again, they’re not trying to get rid of it. They are not.

LYNCH: So Adam, on this front we have a little indication of the market with Stafford-Goff trade, not the full picture, obviously. So, in your best guess, what’s your option on what the Eagles would consider in the fair value ball park?

SCHEFTER: That’s a great question. I would say – and I don’t know that, but right above my head – I think that would be at least a first-round pick. A minimum. And of course, they will want more. They might want two first round picks as far as I know. I want to be very clear. I would say they want a first round pick at a minimum. And that’s the problem, if you’re a trading team [for him], are you ready to give up one? One more? Do you want to do this for Carson Wentz? You tell me.

KINCADE: I don’t know if people would line up to do that. But, Adam, I know that. When you talk to people in the NFL and in circles, all you do is chat and the name pops up. Indy is where we always hear that there’s a connection to Frank Reich and the Indianapolis Colts, that makes perfect sense. Can you tell me the other franchise or any franchise that the name appears when the name Carson Wentz appears?

SCHEFTER: I’d like to know, John, because I think there are more.

KINCADE: Okay, so you don’t hear any specific names. Any franchise.

SCHEFTER: Well, let me say this. I have my own informed opinion. I’m not going to guess because I don’t know. But I have a few ideas for teams that could potentially be interested. But I do not know.
