A number of “Deshaun Watson at the Philadelphia Eagles” trade rumors surfaced earlier this offseason, but that buzz has since died down.
Until NFL insider Adam Schefter brought up the topic on 97.5 The Fanatic’s John Kincade Show this morning, that is.
It’s interesting because Schefter wasn’t even asked specifically about the Houston Texans quarterback or the Eagles. He was actually talking about how the Sixers should look to solve their problems (he thinks they should sign Kyle Lowry) and then turned to a big step the Eagles should take. It was then that he said this:
“The Eagles are better equipped to race Deshaun Watson than any team out there.”
Understandably, Schefter has been asked about the allegations Watson faces and their potential impact on his future.
“Let’s see how it goes first. But, again, what I would say is that if there are charges and he’s jailed or something happens to that effect, something deep and damaging and horrible…. But I guess that will be sorted out one way or another, or that he will serve his discipline for the league, or whatever punishment he has to come, whatever is fair and just, a once done, I just think at that point, moment, when he’s deemed ready to play by the legal authorities, by the National Football League, for me the Philadelphia Eagles should wait.
Schefter later said that he “didn’t tell you anything that you didn’t know”. And that’s true from the perspective that we all know the Eagles will potentially have three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. And potentially a great need for a new starting quarterback.
But one could neglect to regard Schefter’s comments as mere vain speculation. He’s used to formulating opinions, as he did in early January when he explained that he didn’t believe Carson Wentz wanted to be back in Philly.
Beyond that, there are many notable reports from different outlets linking Watson and the Eagles. Let’s review the timeline:
March 17 (CBS Sports) – “Don’t overlook the Philadelphia Eagles as a serious contender for Deshaun Watson. Too many property-related sources have whispered this sentiment to me for me to ignore. “
March 19 (investigator) – “Howie will give up everything he has for Watson,” said an NFL source familiar with the thinking of the Eagles.
March 22 (Houston Chronicle) – The Eagles are among the teams that remain interested in Watson despite the uncertainty moving forward.
April 6 (Houston Chronicle) – “Several NFL teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami dolphins, are monitoring Watson’s latest legal developments, which have complicated all efforts to negotiate for him. “
April 9 (Pro Football Talk) – “A lot has to happen before Deshaun Watson can be traded, especially if he is to be traded in or around the 2021 draft. If somehow Watson manages to properly and appropriately settle the 22 civil lawsuits pending against him ahead of the draft, there is a team to watch closely as a potential destination. Eagles. Yes, the Eagles. They have Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco, but Deshaun Watson has proven himself to be a franchise quarterback and one of the best players in the NFL. As a league source explains, the Eagles are determined enough to improve the team to pursue Watson, if the window opens to do so.

And according to an NFL source, despite their various issues, the two teams could still end up on a Deshaun Watson trade. […] Meanwhile, the Eagles are also trying to recover, having traded Carson Wentz with a tentative plan to hand young Jalen Hurts their QB job – except our source insists Philadelphia’s desire to secure Watson remains in place. square. Nothing seems imminent on Watson’s front with his legal situation yet to play. We may not see a resolution to this situation until 2022.
Schefter’s comments, however, are a reminder that the Eagles are worth watching when it comes to Watson’s future.
