Adam Yates finished second in the UAE Tour’s overall standings, but not before he freaked out in a dramatic crash about 40 km from the finish of Stage 7 on Saturday.
The pilot Ineos Grenadiers tumbled onto the tarmac during a seemingly innocuous phase of the race. Whether it hit the driver’s wheel in front of him or hit something in the road was unclear, but Yates hit the driving face-first, with a few other riders also falling as a ripple effect.
Yates suffered several cuts to his face and was seen bleeding.
He was off his bike for several minutes while tending to the cuts with tissues and rinsing his mouth.
The peloton relaxed to allow him and the other riders engaged in the incident – which included several of his Ineos Grenadiers teammates – to catch up with the peloton.
The British rider continued to seek medical assistance after joining the peloton, returning to the medical car, where his cuts were treated.
Despite the accident, his legs did not appear to be affected. He had no problem joining the peloton, and remained calm in the peloton at the finish.
The crash came shortly after his Ineos Grenadiers started the race with crosswind attacks, with the aim of removing Tadej Pogačar (United Arab Emirates) as general leader.
However, Pogačar was aware of the danger and managed to stay in Yates’ group which broke away from the rest of the peloton.
Yates eventually finished in the peloton, which means he seals second overall. The 28-year-old had hoped to defend his title after winning the overall standings, but a highly motivated Tadej Pogačar proved too difficult an opponent to beat.
