The decision to sign Joe Johnson, if nothing else, is a confusing decision that requires some explanation from the Detroit Pistons.
It may have caught you off guard when it was reported a few weeks ago that Joe Johnson was ready to work for several teams in the NBA. It may have surprised you even more when it was officially announced that Johnson was about to sign with the Detroit Pistons.
From memory, the easy position was that he did not deserve another shot in the NBA or how Michael Beasley – who had been up to make room for Johnson – had been royally screwed up.
However, before entering this debate, I would like to discuss the quality of this story. Johnson was out of the league and made his way – find him via the BIG3 League – on an NBA list. If nothing else, he will have a chance to win a spot in the lineup at training camp.
For the most part, the BIG3 has been more of a joke (for lack of better words) than a real place for ex-players to showcase their talents. And even if they wanted to showcase their talents to finally get back to the NBA, it never worked. Until now.
Johnson won a BIG3 Championship and was named MVP last season. And was powerfully impressive in doing it. If nothing else, he showed that he was always the best of old, past players.
From Johnson's point of view, it's a beautiful story.
That said, Johnson, who has just turned 38, is an interesting addition to the Pistons.
I do not think anyone would deny it. It's a fact. Detroit is not a competitor who is a veteran far from any pretense. Add Johnson, who could possibly never break the rotation, and cut Beasley, who at least could theoretically break the rotation, is a bit strange.
At the very least, this decision should be accompanied by explanations. Joe Johnson has had a great career in the NBA, which includes being a star player seven times. However, Johnson has not played in the NBA since the 2017-18 season. And even then, he hardly saw the ground towards the last part of his passage with the Rockets of Houston.
Despite his good performance in BIG3, I find it hard to believe that Johnson, a year behind the NBA, returns to his age and wins a place in rotation for the Pistons. Again, this is not one of the most talented teams in the NBA. In fact, they could be considered far from it, but it would be quite unpleasant for Johnson to play important minutes for Detroit this season.
Anyway, it's a confusing move, no matter how you come to the conclusion. I guess if you mean that Johnson will bring extra leadership into the locker room, that makes sense. However, if Blake Griffin, at this stage of his career, does not consolidate a cloakroom, perhaps it says more about the team's position for the season than the addition of Johnson himself.
Joe Johnson getting another shot in the NBA is definitely a nice story of well-being, and I do not want to talk about it. But, the Detroit Pistons certainly have some explanations to make about this move. It does not make much sense.
