The Grammy winner took to Instagram Live on Saturday, October 9 to share a preview of her upcoming track, “Easy on Me,” from her upcoming album.
Sitting with her head in her hand, Adele performed a 30-second clip of the forthcoming song, which features the heart-wrenching lyrics, “There’s no gold in this river I’m washing my hands forever / I know there is hope in these waters but I can’t bring myself to swim when I’m drowning in this silence / Baby, let me in.
Fans are already in their feelings about the new song. One of them tweeted, “Dude, this song made me sad already and it’s only been 30 seconds.” Another added: “I have never been so motivated to be sad. I can not wait.
Adele has yet to officially reveal details of the fourth album, but many believe the title is 30, after the year in which the “Hello” singer wrote much of the music. His three previous albums 19, 21, and 25 were also named for his age at the time.
As for the subject of her new album, Adele plunges into a particularly difficult period in her life: her separation in 2019 from her former husband Simon Konecki, with whom she shares her son Angelo.
She said of the end of the relationship, “I was just doing the gestures and I wasn’t happy. None of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me truly loving and being loved. It’s really important to me.
Although the divorce was amicable, songs about it will almost certainly be sad – which, it seems, is exactly what many Adele fans are hoping for.
