Those watching UFC Vegas 12 on Saturday night (October 31, 2020) may have noticed middleweight champion Israel Adesanya sitting next to the cage for the bouts. Fellow 185-pounder Kevin Holland even got involved with the champion a bit, yelling at him from the cage after his quick slam-stopping victory over TKD expert Charlie Ontiveros (watch him).
But Adesanya has bigger fish to fry … much bigger.
After the fights, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Adesanya’s next fight will involve moving up to 205 pounds to challenge Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title. And after that? Maybe a middleweight title defense if a new competitor emerges.
But, it is clear that Adesanya’s main goal for 2021 is a “great” fight with Jon Jones.
“I said I’m going to fight the supposed GOAT, 2021, Raiders Stadium,” Adesanya said on the ESPN + post-fight show. “I hope to God after these elections that all that Corona stuff is gone and we can have crowds again, because this fight has to be in front of a crowd. It’s going to be the biggest fight in UFC history, I believe, other than any fight that’s been staged.
Adesanya wants this thing to be great. The biggest ever. And that means he’ll have to break the current UFC participation record held by … Israel Adesanya, from his fight with Robert Whittaker at UFC 243.
“If it’s not Raiders, I’m thinking of Texas, because I’ve got the gate for the biggest turnout in the world with 57,127,” Adesanya said. “So I’m thinking of Raiders Stadium, if not Cowboys Stadium. There’s more to come, but I’m just saying, no baby. Everything I planned, the strategy in the game of war. “
Allegiant Stadium (aka Raiders Stadium) in Las Vegas can accommodate between 60,000 and 72,000 fans, depending on configuration. AT&T Stadium (aka Cowboys Stadium) can accommodate between 80,000 and 105,000 fans.
Of course, cramming so many fans into one place isn’t going to happen unless “this Corona goes,” which we certainly wouldn’t put in a lot of money after the election, as Adesanya and White hope.
Realistic middle ground? Have Adesanya fight in his home country of New Zealand, one of the places that has successfully eradicated COVID-19 completely. Eden Park has a capacity of 50,000 people and Sky Stadium can seat 34,500. It’s not over 57,127, but there is certainly something to be said about bringing back the biggest fight of your career with your compatriots.
