The Raiders are committed to Derek Carr. Unless they are not.
The most accurate statement would be "until they are not," because Mike Mayock said Thursday that Carr would remain quarterback of the team as long as the team would judge it's in interest of the team to do it.
"Derek Carr is a quarterback of the franchise, and we believe that," Mayock said Thursday. "Beyond that, as in any other position, we will do due diligence. If we found someone we liked better, or if we thought there was better potential, you should do what is needed for the organization. "
This is what brings the Raiders closer to the truth about how the Raiders consider Carr. And that may be news for Carr, who apparently bristled via Twitter at the mere news of private training with new recruit Kyler Murray and who has likely received very different messages from Gruden privately.
Indeed, Gruden has publicly sent very different messages about Carr.
"He is our franchise quarterback. Let me make it clear, Gruden told Scouting Combine in February.
"I'm glad he's our quarterback," Gruden said in the 2018 season, after Gruden and Carr engaged in a passionate exchange.
"Yeah, he'll be our quarterback," Gruden said last month at the league's annual meetings. "I will not answer all the rumors. I do not care about rumors, you know?
But rumors persist and Mayock's comments will do nothing to calm them down.
