All Elite Wrestling announced the video game studios launch on Tuesday night with a mock-Apple presentation that was absolute perfection. But that’s not really the story – the story is this, their new console game.
Graphics tend to be what everyone focuses on, and whether you like the style really depends on your personal preferences. However, the main thing here isn’t what the game looks like – it’s who does it.
Wrestling video game developer Yuke’s, who recently worked on the WWE 2K games (until 2019) is working on the AEW game, and it is rumored that they are working with the AKI team, which was responsible for the legendary and beloved N64 titles – the most important of which was WWF No Mercy.
Without mercy, released in 2000, was the pinnacle of wrestling video games on the N64. To build Wrestlemania 2000, and the company’s two WCW titles (WCW vs. nWo: World Tour, and WCW vs. nWo: RevengeIt was the first wrestling game to mix arcade-style beat-em-up action with deeper wrestling simulation. Where the game really shone was its prolific roster and array of features, both of which drove my friends and I to play long, very late at night in high school. I have a deep affinity for AKI wrestling games, and those who have experienced them know what the WWF Smackdown The series on PlayStation was always better, nothing played as well as the AKI games on the 64.
It marks the return of that style of wrestling play. For years, fans have only really had the opportunity to play the WWE 2K series on consoles, although the Wrestling World Fire Pro, released in 2017, offered a deeper playstyle without the AAA graphics.
No release date is currently set for the AEW game, with work still in progress in the pre-alpha stage, but for now, I just hope it can live up to its pedigree and bring me back to the days when I only played wrestling games.
