Afghans reportedly escaped Kabul through a CIA gate so secret even the Taliban didn’t know it existed

In the last 48 hours of the US evacuation of Afghanistan last month, many vulnerable Afghans who were unable to pass Taliban checkpoints blocking access to Kabul airport have when Even managed to escape the country when the CIA opened a backdoor about two miles from the main airport gates. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the gate, called Glory Gate or Liberty Gate.

The entrance, which was so secret that even the Taliban didn’t know it existed, was first used to smuggle priority CIA business, like intelligence assets or local agents, but its role has expanded as time passed.

Sam Aronson, a State Department political official, was on duty at Glory Gate in late August when several buses carrying Afghans who were working for the US Embassy arrived without incident. So he asked if they could also start bringing families into the streets who were on an evacuation waiting list, the Newspaper reports. He got the green light until he “blew up our door,” he told the Newspaper, and they successfully completed the task. Read more on The Wall Street Journal.
