The American Film Institute has announced the winners of the AFI Awards for 2020, the top 10 films and TV shows “deemed culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image.”
There weren’t any big surprises among the top 10 movie picks. Netflix has won four of 10 slots with “Da 5 Bloods” by Spike Lee, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” by George C. Wolfe, “Mank” by David Fincher and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” by Aaron Sorkin .
Another streaming giant, Amazon Studios, landed two places for two new filmmakers: Regina King’s “One Night in Miami” and Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal”.
The other four time slots were spread over six studios: “Judas and the Black Messiah” by Shaka King (Warner Bros.), “Minari” by Lee Isaac Chung (A24) and “Nomadland” by Chloé Zhao (Searchlight Pictures).
Focus Features’ Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” is a big missing from the lineup. “News of the World” by Paul Greengrass, “On the Rocks” by Sofia Coppola and “First Cow” by Kelly Reichardt are other contenders who did not make the cut.
Netflix has also dominated the television side of things, with “Bridgerton”, “The Crown”, “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Unorthodox” all securing spots. The rest of the love spilled out between AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” Disney Plus’s “The Mandalorian,” “Mrs. America ”and“ Ted Lasso ”from Apple TV Plus.
