Online sales for Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2018 exceeded 2017 figures, according to Bankserv Africa, the largest automated payments clearing center in Africa.
The group reported processing a total of 581,189 online transactions over the weekend, including 404,594 online transactions recorded on Black Friday (a 55% increase from 260,552 transactions in 2017), while Cyber Monday totaled 176,595 transactions, up 36% from 2017).
The most expensive transaction for Black Friday exceeded 6 million rand, while for Cyber Monday it was 5 million rand.
South Africans also began shopping online earlier for Black Friday, culminating from 8:00 am to 9:00 am, while Cyber Monday buyers started a little later from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
The average number of transactions per minute peaked at 695 on Black Friday and 281 per minute the same day.
Cyber Monday was less active, reaching 277 transactions per minute and averaging 125 per minute for the day.
"The figures for this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday have exceeded those of 2017, and more South Africans have decided to connect online to carry out their transactions," said Martin Grunewald, Executive Manager: Payments Business at BankservAfrica.
"Growth from one year to the next is certainly a reflection of the growing popularity of these big shopping days, despite the hardening of the economy."
