CAPE TOWN – Woolworths is recalling its frozen salt rice mix product, the company said Tuesday.
The rice mixture was imported from the Greenyard plant, which may have been the source of a Listeria outbreak in Hungary.
Woolworths said the recall was a precaution after a comprehensive recall was issued by the Hungarian Food Safety Agency.
The food company said in a statement that food security is of critical importance to Woolworths and that they take very seriously all issues regarding the production of their food.
The company added that Listeria is easily destroyed by cooking.
Frozen salted rice mix is uncooked and frozen and therefore requires cooking before consumption.
Careful cooking guarantees the safety of the product.
"We voluntarily recall this product as a precautionary measure, in accordance with the overall instruction of the Hungarian Food Safety Agency."
Woolworths also stated that none of his other sweet products or frozen vegetables had been touched.
"Woolworths and its suppliers have been proactively managing and preventing microbial contamination of food for many years. We have very strict protocols in place as part of our standard food safety management process."
"To verify the safety of our food products, we implement additional monitoring when we have our food products tested independently, which includes Listeria, a product that has been tested and found to comply."
Customers should note that if they have purchased the product, they must return to their local store for a full refund.
