Salary negotiations between the unions and the Eskom electricity company continue to drag out and resume on July 27.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), National Union of Miners (Num) and Solidarity agreed Tuesday to present Eskom's two offers to their members .
Eskom presented two three-year wage agreements. The first is a wage increase of 7% for 2018-2020 with a housing allowance CPI (Consumer Price Index). The second option is a 7.5% wage increase this year and a 7% increase for 2019 and 2020 without housing allowance.
According to Numsa general secretary, Irvin Jim, Phakamani Hadebe, CEO of Eskom Group, promised this year
"The challenges of Eskom should not be used as a justification for denying workers their well-deserved bonus. "
In June, the utility introduced load shedding after workers stole wood from some power plants. The unions have since denied that their members were responsible for the power cuts.
