  • Elon Musk hopes his new company will achieve a "symbiosis" between AI technology and humans.
  • He warned that if it was not treated properly, the AI could endanger the human race in the same way that humans have reduced the number of other primate species, such as mountain gorillas.
  • Musk has also made alarming claims about AI, but not all technical leaders share his fears.

Elon Musk told the documentary program "Axios on HBO" about his artificial intelligence company Neuralink and his efforts to develop a technology that creates a symbiosis between man and AI in order to limit the possibility of an existential threat to humanity.

Neuralink is the neuroscience company of Musk, which is trying to develop an interface for AI technology with the human brain. He describes it as "an interface electrode-neuron at a micro level" or, in simple terms, "a flea and a bunch of tiny threads" that go into your brain.

Musk said the long-term goal is to achieve "a symbiosis with artificial intelligence". He also hopes that this would prevent governments and businesses from monopolizing technology.

He added that artificial intelligence will inevitably exceed human intelligence. "As algorithms and hardware improve, this digital intelligence will far exceed biological monitoring," he told Axios.

He went so far as to suggest that, if mishandled, the advent of general artificial intelligence – that is, an intelligence equivalent to or superior to human intelligence – could make humans a species in danger of disappearing. He used other primates, which humans drove into ever smaller corners of the Earth, as an example.

"When a primate species, homo sapiens, became much smarter than other primates, it pushed all the others into a very small habitat … So there are very few gorillas of mountain, orangutans and chimpanzees – monkeys in general, "he said. .

A 2017 report by Conservation International showed that more than half of the world's primates are at risk of extinction and experts warned of a "mbadive extinction event" caused by agriculture and industrialization.

Musk said that since these animals have been driven into pockets of ever-smaller existence – including zoos – the same thing could happen to humans. "That's one of the possible outcomes for us," he said.

Musk has made equally surprising predictions about the potential for artificial intelligence, while other technology leaders are taking a less sad view. Domain experts have also expressed skepticism about Musk's claims regarding Neuralink, calling its goals "unrealistic".
