Cape Town – Springbok coach Rbadie Erasmus explained why he chatted at number 8 Duane Vermeulen via a microphone during last Saturday's test against Wales in Cardiff.

The incident occurred in the 62nd minute of the match when Vermeulen received a microphone from fitness guru Aled Walters.

"I saw how Duane was injured in the shoulder and was holding him, while the doctor and physio were busy looking after other players," he said. Erasmus Netwerk24 Monday.

"Aled did not see him, but he was closest to Duane. So I asked him to ask him if he was ok. Duane could not understand why he was asking for it and said that he wanted to talk to me quickly himself. He said that his shoulder was too painful to keep playing.

Social media was boiling after the incident, with some critics claiming they were undermining Siya Kolisi's captaincy.

Thando Manana, a former bull striker who has played three games on the Springbok Tour, wrote on Twitter: "It's a fact: Duane Vermeulen will be captain of the Springboks in 2019".

Vermeulen was suffering from a shoulder injury since the first period and was replaced by Francois Louw in the 64th minute.

World Rugby has not yet commented on this, but according to Rule 4 (5h), a player is not allowed to wear a communication device during a match. It is then up to the referee to ask the player to remove it.
