SAN JUAN COUNTY, N. M. (KRQE) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirm cases of polio-related diseases in 31 states, including one in San Juan County, New Mexico.
The CDC has confirmed 116 cases of acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, in the United States this year. That's up 10 from last week.
Most children with confirmed cases had viral disease about a week before the onset of paralysis.
It is not known whether the risk of AFM is greater in states with the highest number of cases or if these states are better able to identify and report cases.
