A look at the 100% electric Taycan from Porsche – coming in 2019

Porsche's 100% electric Taycan model, scheduled for next year, will allow drivers to travel about 400 kilometers after recharging the vehicle for less than 20 minutes, said general manager Oliver Blume in Welt am Sonntag in an interview .

A new 800-volt power system will power a car about 100 kilometers after a four-minute charge, Blume said. The next generation of battery technology, available in about a decade, will again double the range to around 1,000 kilometers and reduce charging time, the CEO said.

The company has teamed up with BMW, Daimler, Ford and Audi to develop an infrastructure for fast loading of vehicles to electricity all over Europe, he said.

Porsche is under pressure from Tesla and the government to eventually eliminate the combustion engines in favor of electric cars. Blume said he had the "greatest respect" for Tesla's chief, Elon Musk, who had created a new segment within the industry. Although the company expects that about half of its newly-sold vehicles will be hybrid or electric by 2025, it will continue to offer its 911 model with a combustion engine "as long as possible".

The next 911 will include a conventional engine, but designed to eventually house a hybrid power plant, said Blume.
