Amazon Web Services Launches Ground Station Satellite Data Service

Amazon is pushing in the space.

The AWS cloud computing industry of Amazon plans to operate 12 radio antennas on Earth to serve as satellite data transfer stations.

The antennas are part of Ground Station, a new all-in-one business package that also includes cloud storage and data processing with the help of Amazon's data processing tools.

Amazon announced Tuesday its partnership on this initiative with Lockheed Martin, which offers a similar satellite antenna service, Verge. Customers of both companies will likely be able to use both services in tandem.

"Together, AWS and Lockheed Martin offer satellite operators greater flexibility, resilience and scale," said Lockheed Martin Space Executive Vice President Rick Ambrose.

The new satellite data service highlights how companies are trying to capitalize on an increasing number of satellites and the growing amount of data they collect, as described by business leaders such as: Virgin Orbit at the following address: The wealth Tech Brainstorming Conference this year. Leaders of these companies hope to use machine learning technology to badyze the influx of satellite images collected in data-intensive work such as weather forecasting and crop yield badysis.

It also highlights the importance of space for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who also founded Blue Origin, a company that builds rockets. This company plans to send people into space in 2019.

It is not known when the ground stations will be available, where the 12 ground stations are planned or if they are already operational. Fortune contacted Amazon for more information and will update this story if it answers.
