ASUS ROG phone

Asus launched the ROG phone in India. Announced for the first time at Computex 2018 in Taiwan, the ROG Phone was the company's first smartphone.

It comes up against a few other smartphones – a niche but a future category – such as Xiaomi's Black Shark, Razer Phone and Nubia Red Magic, though none have been launched in India. Honor Play, of course, was launched in India but had a misplaced playground.

Republic of players

ROG, or Republic of Gamers, is Asus' premium gaming brand for their laptops and peripherals. This includes appliances and accessories – traditionally with a flashy mark and RGB lighting. With the ROG phone, Asus brings these aspects to smartphones. Not only does the phone have a flashy mark and RGB lighting, but it also provides the corresponding specifications.

It sports an aggressive design with a shiny ROG logo on the back, surrounded by sharp edges and exhaust windows. This phone shouts "player" like no other phone we've seen before, and it fits very well with the rest of Asus' ROG lineup.

At the bottom, you will find a USB Type-C port and a headphone jack, as well as another USB Type-C port on the left edge of the device. It may seem a little strange, but it is designed to accommodate the variety of accessories offered by Asus for the phone.

The phone sports a 90Hz AMOLED display, losing to Razer at the speed of reading but probably beating quality. AMOLED displays have traditionally a much better color and contrast than LCDs. A 2160 x 1080 6-inch HDR screen with a 1ms response time.

In terms of camera, the ROG phone has the same camera configuration as the Zenfone 5Z camera (12MP + 8MP wide angle camera and 8MP selfie), so its design is not entirely new.

What is for players

ASUS ROG phone

Asus has added three AirTrigger ultrasonic touch sensors to the phone. These basically give you shoulder triggers when you hold the phone in landscape mode. These are programmable in games and can also be used to launch specific applications and to toggle tasks.

Another notable feature of the game is the X mode. As with other gaming phones, this is essentially a performance mode for the ROG phone. The company says that the X mode increases the minimum clock speed and limits the tasks to the fastest four cores.

The ROG phone uses the ROG user interface, a custom UI layer on Android 8.1 Oreo designed for a mobile gaming approach. Additional software, such as the Game Center, allows you to monitor live system information and enable X mode for high performance games.

Accessories

Asus has announced a range of accessories for the ROG phone, such as an AeroActive Cooler air conditioner, a TwinView portable docking station with secondary display and 6000 mAh battery, a docking station desktop and a third-party GameVice controller with WiGig functionality.

The AeroActive cooler, supplied with the device, is a heat sink that mounts to the back of the phone. It features a fan to keep the phone cool and includes an extra USB Type-C port and a headphone jack so you can stay charged while playing in landscape mode.

There is also the GameVice controller that turns the ROG Phone into a portable console. It contains two badog joysticks, fire triggers and left and right bumpers, a D-pad as well as buttons A, B, X, Y and L3, R3. The Mobile Desktop dock allows players to connect the ROG phone to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard.
