Audi presents one of the stars of the LA 2018 Auto Show with its electrically powered GT e-tron concept: a four-door coupe debuts as an exhibition car.
The next electric Audi is launched, along with the e-tron SUV and the e-tron Sportback, scheduled for 2019. The light body of the four-door coupe is made of several materials. Here you have a carbon roof section as well as many aluminum components and high strength steel support elements.
The technology of this automobile has been developed in close collaboration with Porsche. The design and characters are filled with Audi DNA. The gently sloping roofline of the e-tron GT concept that extends to the rear echoes the Sportback configuration that is the hallmark of the brand.
This however is clearly supported in the future, paving the way for the next step in the evolution of the Audi design language. The cabin, which narrows sharply towards the rear, stands out from the current Audi models.
The wheel arches and armrests are sculpted with strength and, with the unusual flat floor for an electric vehicle, visually emphasize the low center of gravity and dynamic potential of the GT concept.
Functionality and design
The wide lines and numerous functional elements of the bodywork, as well as the vents of the wheel wells and the robust rear diffuser, underline its origins in the wind tunnel. A low drag coefficient that reduces fuel consumption and low lift visually characterize the design.
The threshold area between the wheel arches was pulled out, which contrasts sharply with the cabin. The threshold draws the eye on the floor where the battery is and therefore the energy center of the car.

The design of the twin five-spoke wheels is also aligned with their function. Their dynamic design ensures optimal ventilation of the brake discs while reducing drag. With tire sizes of 285/30, the 22 "wheels are also very readable from the side.
The Audi Singleframe feature is located in the center of the front section. Compared to the two e-tron SUVs, its architecture is much more horizontal. The upper half comes with a lid painted in the body color.

Its surface structure recalls the typical honeycomb pattern of the grille of the Audi RS models – a visual signal that characterizes the Audi e-tron GT concept as a future product of Audi Sport.
With the targeted airflow of the body, large air intakes at the front effectively cool the sets, the battery and the brakes. The hood with its airflow to the surface recalls the last two cars of the brand, the Aicon and PB18 e-tron. It is designed in such a way that the flow of air marries the body, thus reducing unwanted swirls.
The arrow-shaped front section also highlights matrix LED headlamps with high beam headlamps, highlighting the dynamic presence of the Audi e-tron GT concept even at a standstill.

As we have already seen with the brand's current Visions vehicles, the light is also animated and welcomes the driver with a short sequence of functions, the wave of light that extends horizontally: a new signature which should be in serial production in the future. .
A bright strip runs across the width of the back. This band dissipates on the outer edges, in the actual lighting units, into individual corner-shaped LED segments. This architecture combines the e-tron GT and SUV e-tron series, which allows to recognize them instantly, even in the dark, like Audi electric cars.
The new outdoor color kinetic dust is a dark, warm color, similar to titanium. Depending on the incidence and movement of the light, it offers a significant contrast between the surfaces of the body. Matte aluminum elements tinged in the edge and edges of the notches in the window further accentuate these effects.
Sustainable contemporary feeling
Four doors, four seats with a wheelbase of 2.90 m – the interior offers a large dose of daily use, combined with a sensation of exceptional quality. The functional center of the cabin is located on the front left, visibly centered on the driver's seat.
The center console, the large touch screen at the top and the line between the door rail and the badpit frame the driver's workstation and perfectly integrate the driver ergonomically to the controls and infotainment of the car.

The center console and the independent instrument cluster seem to float. The light colors in the upper part of the badpit and the gradation from darker and darker to the ground create an impression of unobstructed width. Race-inspired sport seats in both rows of seats provide optimal lateral support even in tight turns.
Both the center instrument screen and the touch screen above the center console have a black finish. They emphasize the broad and calm design of the interior with its essentially horizontal basic architecture.
Different configurations are available for monitors to present features based on driver preferences, including virtual instrument dials, easy-to-read navigation charts with range information, or various infotainment menu functions. They are controlled via the touch screen with tactile feedback.
With the concept car, designers have deliberately opted for the consistent use of sustainable materials – a clear statement of contemporary automotive design.
The GT concept comes with a vegan interior. Sophisticated synthetic leather is used on seats and other upholstery surfaces. Recycled fiber fabrics are used on seat cushions, armrests and center console.
A microfiber material adorns the headliner and trim of the window pillars. Even the thick pile carpet is made from durable Econyl yarn, a recycled fiber made from used fishing nets.
With two luggage compartments, it offers a large number of options for a Gran Turismo. Here, it takes full advantage of its conceptual advantage as an electric car with compact power units. The rear with its large tailgate offers up to 450 l of cargo capacity. Under the hood, there is an additional capacity of 100 liters.
Performance and scope
434 kW of power system – an impressive figure for the potential of all-electric drive. Separate electric motors are mounted on the front and rear axles.
In both cases, it is synchronous motors with permanent excitation. They applied the torque on the road via all-wheel drive. Naturally, the GT concept is also a real quattro.
An electric Quattro to be precise because there is no mechanical link between the front axle and the rear axle. The electronic control system coordinates the drive between the axles as well as between the left and right wheels. This means optimal traction and just the amount of slip you want.
In the future, the vehicle should accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in about 3.5 seconds before moving to 200 km / h in just over 12 seconds. The maximum speed is set at 239 km / h to maximize range.
One feature that the competition is not able to grant is the ability to fully utilize the potential for acceleration of the drive several times in a row. While the drive goes into overdrive mode for thermal reasons, it can provide the driver with all the potential of the engines and the battery thanks to its sophisticated cooling strategy.
The concept car will have a range of over 400 km, determined according to the new WLTP standard. The energy required for driving comes from a lithium-ion battery with a power greater than 90 kWh, which occupies the entire area under the floor between the front and rear axles thanks to its flat design.
The decisive advantage of this model lies in the extremely low center of gravity of the car, comparable to that of the Audi R8, which decisively benefits the dynamic behavior. The four-wheel drive makes it a perfect synthesis of the agility and precision of a sports car, enhanced with superb directional stability.
The recovery system increases the range up to 30% on Audi electric vehicles – it's essential even with a sports car such as the GT concept. The recovery concerns both the two electric motors and the electrohydraulically integrated braking control system.
Different recovery modes are combined: manual freewheel recovery using shift paddles, automatic freewheel recovery via the aid to predictive efficiency and braking recovery with a transition smoothly between electrical and hydraulic deceleration.
Up to 0.3 g, it recovers energy only via electric motors, without using the conventional brake – which covers more than 90% of all decelerations. As a result, the energy is returned to the battery during virtually all normal braking maneuvers.
Wheel brakes are only involved when the driver decelerates more than 0.3 g using the brake pedal. It also features high performance ceramic discs that also work with several extreme decelerations without compromising braking performance.
Reduces charging times
The car's battery can be charged in several ways: by using a cable connected behind the flap of the left front fender or by using a contactless induction with Audi Wireless Charging.
Here, a loading mat with integrated coil is permanently installed on the floor where the car must be parked and connected to the power supply.

The alternating magnetic field induces an AC voltage in the secondary coil installed in the floor of the car, through the air gap. With a charging power of 11 kW, it can be fully charged in one night.
Wired charging is much faster because the four-door coupe is equipped with an 800V system. This significantly reduces charging times compared to conventional systems currently in use.
It takes about 20 minutes to recharge the battery to 80% of its capacity, which gives it a range of more than 318 km. However, the GT e-tron concept can also be reloaded at low voltage charging points, giving the driver access to the entire charging network.
The ongoing electric offensive
The four-ring brand launched its electric offensive with the world premiere of the all-electric SUV Audi e-tron in September 2018.
By 2025, Audi will be offering twelve fully electric powered cars in the world's largest markets and will make about one third of its sales with electrified models. The Audi e-tron and the Audi e-tron Sportback are expected to make their entry into this portfolio in 2019.

Another common development department project at Audi and Porsche is the Premium Platform Electric (EPP). It will form the basis of several families of fully electric drive Audi models covering segments B to D.
