- Eskom put into service the load shedding of stage 1 Thursday between 12:00 and 22:00, after a series of unforeseen breakdowns.
- Using municipal load shedding schedules, we examined some of the areas likely to be affected.
Eskom has put in place Stage 1 load shedding Thursday afternoon as a result of a series of unplanned outages, spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said.
He added that the collapse of power lines carrying electricity imports from Cahora Bbada to Mozambique was significantly weakening Eskom's capacity, reducing usual imports of 1,500 MW from the neighboring country to around 400 MW. .
Stage 1 rotational shedding requires 1,000 MW spread across the country.
"The shedding is done as a last resort to protect the electrical system against a total collapse or a power outage," Phasiwe said in a statement.
Updates regarding possible failures are available on the Eskom shedding website.
We examined five major cities to determine the suburbs most likely to be affected on Thursday between 12:00 and 22:00:
You can search your suburban load shed schedule on its website. Your group or block number is listed when you search for your suburb. Unlike other municipalities, where load shedding takes place in blocks of two hours, you can expect a breakdown of about 4.5 hours in Johannesburg.
City Power will also alert you via its Twitter account, should there be unforeseen breakdowns. If you are powered off and not listed, you risk a planned outage.
The city of Cape Town has issued a map and a theater table.
NOTE: If you live in zones 17 to 23, you can find your schedule at loadshedding.eskom.co.za.
On Thursday afternoon, the city announced that it would not implement phase 1 load shedding due to excess production capacity.
Ethekwini has also published load shedding maps, including a calendar in isiZulu on its website.
Thursday, three time slots will be concerned: 3.7 then 2.6 and 1.5.
