The new Toyota Corolla sedan – which was revealed in mid-November 2018 – apparently would not be produced in South Africa.
according to Engineering NewsCorolla, the twelfth generation, will be imported to South Africa rather than built at the brand's Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
"The new-generation Corolla will not be manufactured locally, but imported as a completely built product," Toyota SA said at the publication, adding that she was "grateful to the South African market for making it of the Corolla the most popular pbadenger model over the years ".
Like people to Engineering News Note that the Corolla was built in South Africa over the past 43 years, with over a million copies sold on the local market at that time.
Interestingly, however, Toyota SA announced to the publication that it would continue to build the outgoing version of the Corolla. It is not yet clear whether the extended life cycle of Corolla Quest would still be produced or whether it would be replaced by the outgoing model.
Of course, the local branch of the Japanese brand also builds the Hilux, Fortuner and Quantum systems on its Prospecton site. A report dating back to August 2018 suggested that Toyota SA "investigated" the possibility of building a "more affordable" car in Durban.
The new hatchback Corolla (formerly Auris) is expected to be launched locally in February 2019, and the sedan is expected to follow in 2020.
