The five million voters who have not registered or registered have seen the hopes of the ANC and DA crumble. While the ANC won Gauteng, the lean majority is a strong message from its supporters in a province that houses the party's popular president, Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as a large chunk of its cabinet members.
Lebogang Maile, campaign manager at the ANC, said the party had been facing a tough mob in Gauteng, where voters had more choices.
"We are entitled to nothing. We must be humiliated to be able to govern (without coalition). Maile said he was delighted that the ANC has gained ground since 2016, when the party received 45% of the vote in local elections. Using an badogy with the chicken, he said Gauteng voters had options ranging from chicken to chicken to KFC through Nando, with many options in between.
The ANC lost the support of the EFF, which won 14.68% of the vote. Moshe Koma, provincial secretary of the EFF in Gauteng, said the province had the highest number of votes in the party's national count: 633,400 residents in Gauteng voted for his uncompromising positions on the land employment and radical redistribution. Asked about the positions the party was going to push, he replied:
"Of course, it must be the land. Jobs for unemployed youth. The internalization of security guards (and other outsourced workers).
The head of the provincial party committee, Khume Ramulifhe, sitting in the DA section, seemed dejected.
"I am disappointed We have a lot of registered voters who have not surrendered and three million voters who have not registered. The DA also did not aim to become the main partner in forming a coalition government, but it also lost three seats.
Ramulifhe said the party had lost seats in the "peripheries" – peri-urban areas such as Midvaal, Merafong and Pretoria, where its Afrikaans supporters, owners of small farms and farms, have been supporting FF Plus with its message "Slaan Terug" Back).
He said the party should think deeply about the outcome of the elections, but that, like most DA leaders, he did not think that the party leader, Mmusi Maimane, would take the lead even if the party does not go out. It was not one of the major goals it set for 2019, national and provincial elections. He said Maimane's position was safe until the next party congress in 2021. DM
Watch Pauli van Wyk's cat play the piano here!
Not really. But now that we have your attention, we wanted to talk to you a bit about what happened to SARS.
Tom Moyane and his acolytes bequeathed South Africa with a Tax deficit of 48 billion rand, in February 2018. It's the only thing that grew up under the Moyane mandate … the year before, the hole had been 30.7 billion rand. And to fund these gaps, you know who has to cough? You – the South African taxpayer.
It was the remarkable work of a team of investigative journalists, Pauli van Wyk and Marianne Thamm of Scorpion as well as our great friends at amaBhungane, the SARS captors were finally emptied of the system. Moyane, Makwakwa … a lot of them … gone.
But our work is not finished yet. We need more readers to become Maverick Insiders, the friends who will help to ensure that a lot of additional investigations are taking place. The contributions go directly to the growth of our editorial team and the guarantee of a sustainable future for Daily Maverick and Scorpio.
