A pirate team ready for a major overhaul

AN EXODUS approaches Orlando Pirates with the Bucanneers ready to reduce their team following their recent shopping spree that brought nine new signings.

Pirates signed Brilliant Khuzwayo, Abel Mabaso, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Linda Mntambo, Asavela Mbekile, Vincent Pule, Ben Motshwari, Paseka Mako and Meshack Maphangule.

According to the club's president, Irvin Khoza, it goes without saying that they must release a number of players.

"We have to downsize, it's an achievement, but we're going to make an appropriate announcement as to who stays and who goes on time," Khoza said.

Although they kept their cards near their chest, it is likely that the club will separate from the players who fought for the game last season. Among these could be Thamsanqa Gabuza, Thamsanqa Sangweni, Nkosinathi Mthiyane, Thabo Matlaba, Phetso Maphanga, Issa Sarr, Mpho Makola and Wayne Sandilands.

None of these players played a key role at the end of last season, as the club experienced such a turnaround that they finished in second place. They will seek to build on this foundation in the new season.

When asked if they are finished on the market, Khoza says, "I do not know."

It is believed that pirates strive to obtain the services of Captain Bafana Bafana, Thulani Hlatshwayo.

The skipper is one of the best defenders of the country and signing him will be a big hit for the Buccaneers.

The Bucs' president knows, however, that signing players will not yield results.

"In football, you can not expect I have to work hard, so there is no football, I think this World Cup has shown us, you have to work hard and the rest will follow, "said Khoza, who refused to put pressure on coach Micho Sredojevic for what he delivers silverware.

The pirates are here for a long season. In addition to the four local competitions, Absa Premiership, MTN 8, Telkom Knockout and the Nedbank Cup will participate in the challenging Caf Champions League.

The campaign will test their resolution and capabilities as they seek to to end an unusual four-season sterile spell
