GALLE – South Africa is facing a difficult battle for the rest of the first try against Sri Lanka at tea time on the second day. The Sri Lankans are currently out of 25 lossless, with an overall lead of 186 points, the 10 wickets remaining intact.
The Proteas were regrouped for only 126 to concede a huge first-round deficit of 161 points. After the first seven wickets of South Africa fell to the lap of Dilruwan Perera (4/46), Rangana Herath (2/39) and Lakshan Sandakan (1/18), the Sri Lankan captain Suranga Lakmal (3/21) wiped the tail with its crimpers to send the Proteas package for 126. It's the lowest total of South Africa in 25 years on the island .
There was some resistance to the seventh gate with Protea captain Faf du Plessis (49 against 88 balls) and Vernon Philander (18) sharing a 64-run partnership. But both drummers were sacked on the same total – 115 – to complete the innings.
Sri Lankan opener Danushka Gunathilaka (10 out) and Dimuth Karunaratne (15 not out) took advantage of this advantage by stretching their team's lead without too much alarm.
