London – Red Bull Formula One driver, Max Verstappen, jokingly suggested that he could be part of a community service penalty by attending the FIA Awards Gala in Russia next month .
The 21-year-old Dutchman, punished by the FIA for his post-race altercation with France's Esteban Ocon in Brazil, finished fourth in the championship that ended Sunday in Abu Dhabi.
The top three drivers are expected to attend the annual awards ceremony, which will be held this year in St Petersburg on December 7, even if those who do not have collectible trophies would prefer to be elsewhere.
Verstappen reportedly defeated Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari in third place overall when he finished second in Sunday's race rather than third and then joked that it was deliberately planned.
Verstappen smiled as he asked Lewis Hamilton, a five-time world champion and winner in the race, if he had secured third place.
"Two points behind (Raikkonen) – but at least I do not have to go to the gala," he said.
"Luckily for you," said Hamilton, a regular at the ceremony with four titles in the last five years and second in 2016.
"We calculated that," Verstappen replied. "I'm sorry, unless I can do it as a community service day, I'll leave.
"I would do public relations business before, because everyone is great, I'll do a special speech at night …"
S addressing Sky Sports television later, and in response to a question about whether he might soon empty the trash cans, Mr. Verstappen said that community service should be "adapted" ".
"I certainly will not look ridiculous because I think I'm already being treated very badly," he said. "So we'll find something right, because I'm not going to look stupid."
The FIA has not yet decided what it was considering for the Dutchman, winner of two races this year and considered a future champion.
