Sasol inaugurated its new Shondoni mine in Mpumalanga as part of its mine replacement program. Meaning "a place of wealth", Shondoni replaces the Middelbult coal mine, which has reached the end of its life.
Sasol Mining is the third largest producer of South African coal and operates one of the largest underground coal mines in the world. The company's CEO, Bongani Nqwababa, says the R 14 billion mine replacement program supports Sasol's strategy of operating its facilities in South Africa until 2050.

The mine also holds the record for the longest single conveyor without intermediate axle in Africa, 21 km away.
