An "incendiary device" found hidden in the Woolworths store in the Gateway Mall – the second in as many days – forced a complete evacuation of the store on Saturday.
The discovery of what appears to be an explosive device – a cell phone attached to a short length of white PVC pipe – was found hidden in store furniture.
This follows the introduction of "extra precautionary measures" after the same store and another in Durban were set on fire on Thursday. Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said that the explosives unit had been deployed to the scene and had removed the aircraft safely.
A case of violation of the act of explosives was recorded, said Zwane. "Was planted at Woolworths at Gateway, which caused a fire and caused an evacuation of the store.
Another gear had been planted at Woolworths in the Pavilion, which had exploded
The store's apparatus Gateway, which would have been fashioned from a cell phone and a propellant, had been planted in a jacket pocket in a clothes rack
The device was then fired, causing a fire.
Woolworths spokeswoman Kirsten Hewett confirmed that a device had been found and that the authorities were called upon to investigate and badist
"We can badure the public that we take these incidents incredibly seriously. and we do everything possible to ensure the safety of our people and our customers.
Due to the sensitivity of the investigation, we are unable to disclose the additional protective and detection measures that we have implemented in our stores. Hewett added.
