Destiny 2: Abandoned Bungie's shared world shooter shifted the shooter game to the amateur mindset of hardcore fans and delivered the best story and the best content of Destiny's story. He also set great expectations for Destiny 2The annual pbad, a trio of $ 35 content packs that should begin on Tuesday, Dec. 4 with Destiny 2: The Black Armory. The annual pbad consisted of a collection of thematic DLCs containing new elements and new activities, but the first explanations were vague and left many questions to the fans. What is all in the annual pbad? Is it just another three Warmind or – gulp – DLC the size of Osiris? What does each DLC contain? How often will these DLCs be published?
Bungie has released a new video that answers some of these questions earlier in the day. I've also talked to David "Deej" Dague, head of the Bungie community, to understand how the studio plans to follow Forsaken and what an annual $ 35 Destiny 2 pbad gives you.
The annual pbad includes three seasons of content: the forge season (which begins today, November 27th), the Drifter season and a mystery season not yet named. According to the updated Destiny 2 roadmap, everyone will be able to experience new events and updates during these seasons, but you will have to buy the annual pbad in order to read the contents of Black Black, Joker's Wild and Penumbra. All this will take place from December 2018 to August 2019, said Bungie, with new downloadable content dropping approximately every three months.
However, the annual pbad will not follow Destiny's previous DLC model. "We have a lot of old perceptions to crush," says Deej. "It's not Warmind, it's something new." With the annual pbad, Bungie hopes to change the way players think about Destiny DLC, not to mention what they think. Rather than a lump sum of content, the annual pbad will provide "an extra layer of challenge and reward" that increases each season with regular content drops. In other words, each annual pbad DLC will consist of several smaller updates providing weekly and monthly updates of Dreaming City style.
Destiny 2: The Black Armory offers a good example of how it will work. The goal of The Black Armory is to collect the best weapons of the Golden Age and complete the incumbent arsenal. To do this, you will have to help the armorer Exo Ada-1 to rekindle four lost Forges. The Lost Forges are a new type of three-player mode, matchmade horde, in the vein of Escalation Protocol and Blind Well, although Deej says they propose new mechanics and new challenges. A new Forge will be available each week – which is not unlike the Ascendant Challenges in the City of Dreams – and after four weeks, the Forge's rotation will begin again.
All the content of the annual pbad will not be linked to this schedule. In addition to the four lost forges, the Black Armory also contains a new raid – not a star-type spire-type hangout, as Bungie said earlier, but a real raid – staged in Earth's Last City. That being said, the Black Armory does do not have a traditional campaign. "It's not a cinematographic campaign," Deej says, "but we absolutely tell a story." In the absence of a history mission, the story of The Black Armory will be told through elements such as traditions, triumphs and of course recovered weapons, said Deej.
I guess the goal of the annual pbad is to give players enough content so that they have new things to do every week, but not so much at once that they badyze them in a week and that they are short of resources. Bungie can never hope to create content at the rate at which Destiny players consume it. So, instead of another flood of content inevitably followed by a drought, the annual pbad has been designed to provide a steady stream of updates. At least it's the dream. And after seeing the evolution of the Dream City, I'm back with that dream. Weekly content like Ascendant Challenges and timed content like The Shattered Throne kept Forsaken cool, and if the annual pbad can keep that momentum going for the next nine months while adding new loot to the hunt, I think that Destiny 2 will be shaped long.
The new Black Armory raid is just that, a complete raid. In other words, it's going to be a lot bigger than a raid liar.
