Although MultiChoice has confirmed working on a streaming service to take on Netflix, there is still no firm release date for the product.
Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, told MyBroadband in May work on the serviceBut securing broadcast rights for all the entertainment content they offer on their existing DStv plans was a hurdle to break.
MultiChoice's move comes after Netflix's success globally and in South Africa, with Netflix offering a wide range of content at a significantly lower price than DStv Premium.
As part of its response, MultiChoice has also launched a new video unit for OTT services called Connected video, which is led by CEO Niclas Ekdahl.
Responding to questions from MyBroadband after a recent press conference, Ekdahl said the company was working on the DStv streaming service – but no firm launch date has been set.
Sector stakeholders had previously estimated that the service would be launched in 2019.
Bit rate
Ekdahl added that DStv's current online offering, DStv Now, reaches up to 250,000 active users a day.
DStv now enables existing DStv customers to watch their set of satellite channels online via supported applications or a web browser.
He added that they were currently working on improving the DStv Now interface for users to optimize their ability to discover content.
DStv Now is also working on its adaptive rates, in order to reduce the bit rate for the lower quality video setting.
This gives customers more options in managing the use of data.
DStv Now currently offers the following quality settings.
- Upper (up to 1080p) – 1.7 GB / h
- high (up to 720p) – 1.2 GB / h
- Way (up to 576p) – 700 MB / h
- Low (up to 360p) – 210 MB / h
