Focus on the new Toyota Prius – Arrival in South Africa in 2019

The new 2019 Toyota Prius made its public debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The new Prius is the first Toyota to benefit from the hybrid AWD-i, an all-wheel drive system.

The intelligent system uses an extra high torque electric motor to provide additional drive through the rear axle when needed.

It is designed to engage automatically when you move away, at a maximum speed of 11 km / h and when sensors detect low grip conditions – wet and slippery surfaces – at speeds between 11 and 70 km / h.

Compact and lightweight, the unit has no center differential or drive shaft between front and rear. There is therefore little intrusion into the cargo space and little compromise on the exceptional fuel economy and low emissions of the Prius.

The AWD-i hybrid model also includes a new hybrid nickel-metal hybrid battery designed for cold weather performance, while the Prius front-wheel drive is equipped with a new hybrid lithium-ion battery.

External changes

Toyota has also made several physical modifications to the hybrid, with the highest point of the bumper raised.

The 2019 Prius also features new slim headlights, with a new inverted trapezoid shape built into the tailgate around the license plate.

In the cabin, changes have been made to the center console layout and some controls on the dashboard.

Changes to the equipment specifications include:

  • Increase the size of the wireless charging tray for the adaptation of larger smartphones;
  • Detailed navigation instructions have been added to the head-up display feature;
  • A multimedia touch screen with a faster response that can be used with "pinch and flick" gestures familiar with smartphone use.

Toyota South Africa confirmed that the new 2019 Toyota Prius would be available in the first quarter of 2019.

The local specification and availability of the AWD-i must be confirmed in the approaching launch.
