MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United's Alexis Sanchez is doubtful for the Premier League visit to Southampton on Saturday, having encountered a hamstring problem in training on Thursday, Nov. 29, the club said on its website.

The injury from Chile's front, which was ruled out of Tuesday's win in the Champions League on the Young Boys, "will require further investigation to confirm its seriousness," the club said.

Sanchez left the bench in the league games against Manchester City and Crystal Palace this month, but started for the last time in the Juventus Champions League win on Nov. 7.

United is fighting in seventh place in the league with 21 points in 13 games before moving to St Mary's.

The British media also reported Thursday that United had exercised its option to extend the contract of goalkeeper David De Gea for another year as talks continued on a long-term deal.

The contract of the Spanish international was to end at the end of the season, which would have allowed him to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club from 1 January.

Manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday hailed De Gea, 28, the world's best goalkeeper after United earned a Champions League spot, and said the Spaniard, whose superb rescue had prevented the Swiss, from staying at home. Old Trafford.

"… I know he wants to stay, I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they are working there so hopefully soon or later they will reach a conclusion "Mourinho told reporters.
