A new study from the Lightstone Data and Analysis group shows that South African drivers travel less – traveling shorter distances – but also stop more often at their favorite service stations.
According to the group's data, which has studied the behavior of more than 400,000 vehicles and traffic in more than 3,100 service stations across the country, the distance traveled by South African motorists has decreased by 7% over the past year. the last year.
However, traffic from petrol stations increased by 2% over the same period.
Linda Reid of Lightstone said the increase in traffic at gas stations could be attributed to several factors:
"Consumers fill up with smaller amounts of fuel because of the exorbitant fuel increases or stop more often for additional services provided by the service stations," she said.
Fuel price up
South Africa has seen several successive increases in fuel, starting in April 2018 – with rising fuel taxes – the only sign of a reduction being scheduled for December 2018.
Gasoline prices peaked in October and November, when the price of 95-octane gasoline reached R17 for the first time in South Africa's history.
Rising fuel prices have increased pressure on consumers and businesses, who are already feeling the pressure of rising costs due to the 15% VAT hike in April, as well as an economy in loss of speed.
A recent BusinessTech survey of 5,000 motorists revealed that the majority (76%) claimed that higher gasoline prices had forced them to change their driving habits.
However, Reid said that stopping for additional services could also be a reasonable explanation for more frequent visits.
She noted that gas stations have added a wider variety of retailers to the forecasts, and that a growing "coffee culture" has developed in South Africa and that it has been adopted. during the last years.
Lighstone's data showed that drivers stop on average 9.2 times a month and spend an average of seven minutes per stop.
When badyzing the frequency of visits to service stations, 11% of drivers visit service stations only once a month.
At the same time, about 27% of drivers visit service stations between two and four times a month and 44% visit five to 14 times a month.
"Drivers who stop at gas stations more than 15 times a month account for 18% of the total," the group said.
