A painting by Pierre Auguste Renoir valued at 160,000 euros was stolen from a Vienna auction house.

The Gulf, Sea, Green Cliffs, a lesser-known landscape of the prolific French Impressionist, was removed by three men from his setting exposed on Monday before a planned auction at the Dorotheum auction house.

A spokesman for the police said: "The men left the site through different issues and fled".

They published photos of the three suspects taken from security camera images and added that the theft had been professional.

The Dorotheum, Vienna's best-known auction house in the heart of the city, confirmed that a robbery had occurred but would not provide more details.

The painting was estimated between 120,000 and 160,000 euros and was to go under the hammer tonight.
